What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic practice, which is a traditional medical system that
originated in India over 3,000 years ago. It has been used for centuries to
strengthen teeth and gums, reduce bad breath, prevent plaque and improve
our overall health. According to Ayurveda, the tongue is the microcosm of the
entire body.
Essentially, oil pulling is the act of taking a small amount of oil and swishing it
around your mouth for a certain amount of time. It is usually done in the
morning on an empty stomach.
How oil pulling works?
The bacteria, toxins and microbes in your mouth are single-celled organisms,
which are enclosed by fatty cell membranes. When these membranes come in contact with the oil, they stick to it. In the process the oil generates
antioxidants, which damage the cell wall of the microorganisms and kill
them. Once you spit out the oil, the toxins leave with it. Some theorize that
the oil has a soap-like effect on the teeth and makes it harder for bacteria to
stick.
When to oil pull?
Oil pulling should be done before breakfast on an empty stomach because
that is when your mouth is most full of bacteria and toxins. There’s debate on
whether you should perform oil pulling before or after brushing your teeth. I
personally do it before, from the research I've done more studies have said to
do it before. I say you do what feels right to you. Regardless, you’re still taking
that next step to help remove bacteria in your mouth, so I feel like you can’t
go wrong.
Which oils should you use?
Traditionally, sesame oil has been used for oil pulling throughout history, but
you can also use coconut oil (which recently has become the most popular) or
sunflower oil. Depending on your situation, these are things to consider when
choosing your preferred oil.
Sesame oil: can reduce the chances of getting gingivitis caused by plaque. It can stop the oxidation that produces free radicals (as an antioxidant) and fight bacteria as an antibiotic.
● Coconut oil: contains high amounts of lauric acid which reduces plaque adhesion, works as a cleansing action to whiten teeth and reduce inflammation.
● Sunflower oil: can reduce plaque formed on the teeth and reduce the risk of gingivitis. Personally, I had a huge tube of coconut oil already at home, so use that to oil pull.
6 benefits of oil pulling:
1. Improve oral health: Maintaining a healthy oral microbiome is crucial for the health of your teeth and gums. The bacteria Streptococcus mutans has been known to decay teeth, cause plaque, result in strep throat and gingivitis. By removing bad bacteria and toxins from your mouth you can support healthy gums, reduce plaque build up, and reduce bad breath.
2. Detox the body: According to Ayurveda, there is a correlation between oral hygiene and overall well-being. The harmful bacteria that thrive in your mouth eventually enter your body with food, causing health complications. When the saliva is activated with oil pulling, it absorbs biological toxins, chemical toxins, and environmental toxins, which are removed from the body. Thus, detoxifying and purifying the body from toxins.
3. Naturally whiten teeth: The oil pulls away bacteria, plaque build up, and other impurities from your teeth. Gradually it removes stains from the teeth, resulting in naturally whitening your teeth.
4. Clear up skin: Another bacteria that can be removed from oil pulling is P. acnes, which is responsible for acne and breakouts. By removing this bacteria not only will it clear up your skin, but can heal skin issues on the rest of your body like rashes and eczema.
5. Improve heart health: Another negative effect of Streptococcus mutans is that it can release a type of toxin into the bloodstream that can lead to cardiovascular diseases.
6. Improve digestive health: Since the mouth is connected to the gut, balancing your oral microbiomes can also help prevent any issues to the microbiome of your gut. Resulting in less digestive issues.
7. When the saliva is activated, it absorbs and removes toxins from the mouth thus, purifying the body.
How to oil pull:
● Start by putting 1 tablespoon of oil in your mouth.
● Swish the oil in your mouth, moving it around both sides, as well as in front of your teeth. Making a chewing motion can also help activate your saliva.
● Continue the process for 15–20 minutes. You can work up to this time frame. To start out try for at least 5 minutes.
● Spit out the oil in the trash or toilet. Spitting the oil down the drain can clog it up.
● Rinse your mouth with warm water.
Tips:
● A good way to start a new habit is to incorporate it with something you already do. Personally, I oil pull as I am getting ready to go work out. Mornings can already be chaotic, multi-task to make your life easier.
● Be careful not to swallow the oil. By doing so, you will be ingesting the toxins and bacteria back into the body and you don’t want that.
● Many people have different opinions on how you ‘should’ do oil pulling, as humans, our bodies are so different. Try what you think is best and change accordingly to best suit your body.
